Attacks and Threats against Journalists Ukraine Three journalists with Nashe Radio were forcibly put into a car and to the Kyiv suburbs by unknown individuals in Kyiv on August 8. The kidnappers threatened the journalists by shooting in the air and demanded some suitcase from them. The kidnappers beat the journalists for four hours and took their money and mobile phones before releasing them. Ukrainian Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko does not believe the incident is an encroachment on freedom of the press. He said the car carrying the journalists had clashed with a jeep owned by the company Zaporozhstal. After the police was called, the driver of the jeep said a suitcase full of money had been stolen from his car. “As a result, he [the driver of the jeep] called seven security guards from a private security division of Zaporozhstal, who kidnapped the Nashe Radio journalists, which is illegal, took hem out of the city and subjected them to violence,” said Lutsenko. According to Lutsenko, it later turned out that the suitcase was stolen by a third person, who was passing by the accident scene. II. Lawsuits against Journalists Azerbaijan Shakhin Agabeili, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Milli Yol, was detained by the police in Baku on August 9, Day.az reported. According to Day.az, before that Agabeili received a call on his mobile phone from a person who introduced himself as a police officer and asked him for a meeting near the Besh Myartyabya building. When Agabeili came there, he was immediately arrested. Interior Ministry spokesman Ekhsan Zakhidov said that Justice said the Nasimin Court on August 3 ordered for Agabeili to be forcibly brought to court. Rashid Gadzhily, director of the Media Rights Institute, in turn, said: «the court has ignored the defendant’s arguments, which were based on the constitution of Azerbaijan and the European Convention of Human Rights. No matter how sharp Zardusht Alizade’s statements were, they go beyond the context of public debate on the situation in public bodies. In democratic countries, statements by heads of public bodies that such statements are defamatory run counter to the concept of freedom of speech. If this case makes it to the European Court, this circumstance does not bode well to the Azerbaijani administration.” *** The Baku Nasimin District Court on August 11 tried a lawsuit filed by the Interior Ministry and the newspaper 24 Saat. Turkmenistan Ogulsapar Muradova, a Radio Liberty reporter in Ashgabat, has been in prison in Turkmenistan for seven weeks, says an August 10 news report. The activist believes the actions taken by the police are illegal. He believes he was detained because of an article criticizing one of the local authorities published in the edition of the paper. Ukraine Margarita Zakora, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dzerzhinets, said she is experiencing pressure from local criminal groups, says an August 8 news report. According to Zakora, Dzerzhinets is fighting illegal privatization of commercial objects and corruption in the city’s administration and law enforcement agencies. “The principled, objective stance of Dzerzhinets irritated these people and leads them to threat and intimidate its editor-in-chief. They are trying to silence the paper,” said Zakora. Zakora also said 18 identical lawsuits have been filed against her, the windows of her apartment have been shot at, and leaflets slandering her are being distributed in the city. IV. Restrictions of Access to Information Ukraine Channel 5 could not run a live broadcast of a press conference given by Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich as exclusive right to broadcast the conference was given to a different channel, Channel 1, says an August 11 news report.
